How Does Cambell's Cheddar Soup Taste

How long is Lent?

If you ask people, when Lent begins, and when they end, the answer is: From Ash Wednesday to Easter. Often there is also a consciousness of the last 40 days of Lent.

From Ash Wednesday to Easter (excluding) there are but 46 days.

is in the prayers for the blessing of ashes on Ash Wednesday it:
. "Help us to celebrate the forty days of penance in the right spirit, that we are celebrating the holy Easter with pure hearts"

is true that Lent , called Lent, but on Ash Wednesday begins, but before the "Paschal three days of suffering, death and resurrection of the Lord" ends: that is before the Paschal Triduum, and this begins on the eve of Good Friday, Holy Thursday. On Good Friday and Holy Saturday is a two-day mourning fasting.

Originally, Lent began on the first Sunday of Lent and ended - as today - with the beginning of the Easter Triduum. From the First Sunday of Lent
up for Holy Thursday is 40 days.
Biblical role models
Jesus fasted (Matt. 4:2; Lk 4:1 f)
Moses 40 days on Mount Sinai (Ex 34:28)
Elijah on the way to Mount Horeb (1 Kings 19:8).

BUT: the Sundays are not nearly daily.
On Sunday (the Day of Resurrection) is not fast. Nor
on the six Sundays of Lent.
remained only 34 days of fasting.
How the the real one to 40 days of fasting increased.

How?
dissolve the Good Friday and Holy Saturday the Easter Triduum and counted them on the 34 days of fasting and was thus 36 days of fasting.
soon was extended into the four working days before the first Sunday of Lent came in and so on Ash Wednesday as the start of Lent.
